2014 RCJ Machado Brothers Camp A Huge Success

What a great weekend spent training under THE best family in martial arts, alongside amazing training partners in DFW!  Too much info to sift through right now but I can honestly say everything from Rigan's handcuff series, to John's quick reminder to remember the fundamentals that this system was built upon; SELF DEFENSE, the 2014 camp is arguably the best one yet.

A quick shout out to NWJJA Seattle and Maple Ridge.  I appreciate my training partners.
I also want to thank my coach Brian Johnson for his time, effort and guidance.
EVERYONE owes Lindsay Machado a HUGE thank you and hug, for without her ... no camp.  Period.
Lastly but certainly not least I want to send my love and gratitude to Carlos, Roger, Rigan, and John for their unbiased sharing and teaching of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Truly an inspiration for me both on and off the mat.

Rigan and Team Nexus

John Machado...sign behind us says it all!

Carlos The Wise
Roger the firefighter
I am already looking forward to 2015's camp, which from what a little birdie told me will most likely be in a different city!

Prof. Marcos Santos Promoted

Attendees of the 2013 RCJ Machado 5 Brothers Camp were treated to a special belt promotion on Sunday afternoon, as we saw Prof. Marcos Santos receive his fifth degree in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!  Marcos has been a loyal and dedicated student of the Machado brothers since he was 12 years old.  He was one of the first black belts to open an academy in NYC which was unfortunately cut short by the disaster of 9/11.  Marcos has been working diligently to grow his academy in Ft. Worth, TX.

Always willing to lend a hand and lighting up any room with his contagious smile, Marcos Santos epitomizes what it means to be a black belt under the Machado family.  Loyalty.  Hard work.  Perseverance.  These are all synonymous with "black belt" under the Machado banner, and Marcos goes above and beyond in all categories.

Please take this moment to congratulate Professor Marcos Santos on 5th degree black belt, and check out this footage from 1997 as Santos takes gold in the brown belt division with Rigan Machado coaching him, Carlos Machado in the background, and I believe that is Joe Moreria reffing.

NWJJA Represents at RCJ Machado 5 Brothers Camp

L-R Top: Jake / Carlos / Rigan / Brian / John / Roger / Jean Jacques
Bottom: Rachel / Kelland / Dario / Ben / Denise / Rick

My brain was flooded with Rigan Trap details as is and then Jean Jacques came along and completely destroyed what little was left, so I apologize that this will be rather short, sweet, and not so articulate.  As I sit here exhausted from 15 hours on the mat with the Machado family at the 2013 RCJ Machado camp, the one thing I can put into written form is my appreciation for the only BJJ school I have ever known; the NW Jiu Jitsu Academy.

Our academy, along with our affiliates from Canada, brought a total of 12 people representing 10% of the total attendance of the camp, and I can only believe that those numbers will grow each subsequent year!  To share in an experience like this is priceless and we had a great crew to travel with.  A huge thanks to my training partner Denise Holcomb who is hands down one of the best partners to work with period let alone at a camp this size.  No one else I would rather watch the Stars with (again next year right?).  Denise, by the by, had the wonderful distinction of being the only female black belt present at the camp!

Also much thanks to Rick Monce, Kelland Lindsey, Ben Wendell, and Rachel Lin for their support, ridicule, and great times.  Also a shout out to our brothers to the north, Canada that is... though they clearly need better taste in hockey teams it seemed like everyone had a blast and worked really well together!  It was great sharing the mat with Perry Bateson and his boys.
Voted two sexiest camp attendees!

A special shout out to my brother from another mother "Big" Mike Gates.  Though he is now a BLUE BELT under Marcos Santos, we at NWJJA consider him our adopted son as he has wiggled his way into every one's hearts!  We love you brother and you know you always have a home away from home with us.

I want to thank each and every one of you for the absolute joy you have brought our coach Brian "Mr. BJJ" Johnson.  Though he may never say it, your attendance and involvement with the RCJ Machado camp means the absolute world to him and each and every one of you made him proud this weekend.  So thank you for making this an amazing event for my friend and coach.  I cannot tell you how happy that makes me.

On that note... to our coach Brian Johnson... bro, what can I say?!  Every moment I am around you, you make me a better person.  It has been too long for one of these road trips!  We differ in many ways, yet compliment each other like blood brothers.  You are an inspiration to me, a friend to me, and I am eternally grateful for your guidance.  I am not sure if your students understand how fortunate they really are, but I do and from the bottom of my heart I thank you.  Thank you for introducing me to a world that has become my lifestyle, literally my life.  Thank you for guiding me to multiple world championships.  Thank you for being there like no one else was when I needed someone most.  My loyalty to you shall never falter.

Before you sign off, if you could quickly fill out the survey to your right.  I am trying to get an idea of what kind of kimono's my readers like.  If you vote "other" please leave a comment on this post as to which ones you like.

Can't wait for next years camp.  See you all on the mat tomorrow night!

RCJ Machado 5 Brothers Camp: Day 1

As we close in on the waning hours of a cool Texas night my head is awash with all sorts of guard passing strategies and principles. Already participants are reaching maximum grappling capacity knowledge wise, yet all we could talk about all dinner was how much we anticipated the next two days!  Over 95 participants from as far away as British Columbia, South Carolina, Michigan, Ontario, California, and Washington converged on Dallas / Ft. Worth for the fifth straight RCJ Machado 5 Brothers Camp, and judging from the smiles and back slaps... everyone had a blast!

Day one of the RCJ Machado 5 Brothers camp started off with a bang as Carlos took the reins and focused his 3 hours on building the fundamental movements we would need the rest of the camp.  This seminar set the pace for the remainder of the weekend as the elder Machado brother guided us through a number of fundamental movements that we will use the rest of the weekend.  This approach is nothing short of genius, as many times instructors have a limited time for a seminar so it is common to brush over minute details of any given technique or movement.  Not the Machados!

Machado Black Belts
Carlos was followed by three hours of the youngest Machado, John who spent the afternoon talking about passing the guard.  The movements and fundamentals Carlos taught meshed perfectly with John's curriculum and made for a seamless transition.  As with all lessons with the Machado brothers we were blessed with some stories and good natured ribbing from the brothers along with their senior most black belts.  It is this mat-mosphere that makes any event with the Machado brothers feel much  more then just a seminar... you truly feel a part of something greater, a member of a larger family.

I cannot wait until tomorrow and on that note I will be signing off.  Not sure if I will get the opportunity to post anything tomorrow, but I will catch up no matter what.  Thank you so much to the Machado family, all our training partners on the mat, and to my brethren from NWJJA: B / Denise / Kelland / Rick / Rachel!

Machado Camp Day One

What a whirl... sleep deprivation, caffeine, alcohol, more sleep deprivation, locked luggage, and some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced (avoid flying American Airlines), yet the Pac NW crew arrived in Dallas, TX. in full force for the 5 Brothers Machado Camp!   Unfortunately due to American Airlines terrible service we missed Carlos Machado's opening blitzkrieg on his latest developments on the hook sweep, arguably the Machado families bread and butter.  But from the murmurings amongst the crowd we missed some golden nuggets destined to change sweeps games across the board.

Pac NW Crew with Carlos and John!
Held at Carlos' spacious Farmers Branch RCJ Headquarters, 2012's camp saw well over 50 students on the mat for Prof. John Machado's afternoon session on follow ups if the hook sweep fails.  Common troubleshooting and finishes from a failed sweep gave practitioners a chance to work Carlos' hook sweep and the backup plan if for some reason the sweep fails.  Ending the session with a great detailed look at the rolling knee bar!

This type of piggybacking and congruency is exactly what I recall from the 2008 camp held in South Carolina.  The brothers all bring individual games and styles for sure, but when together their is a certain synergy that I have not felt with other coaches representing over 150 years of collaborative Brazilian Jiu Jitsu idea's and strategies.

Stories of childhood rivalries bounce off of walls adorned with pictures representing all aspects of the Machado brothers involvement in the art of BJJ:  Rigan competing in the 2nd ever Pan Am's; Carlos' gold medals from the US Open and Pan Am's of yesteryear; and clippings documenting the history of BJJ in America.

All in all if you are not here you seriously need to ask yourself why!?  Tomorrow we hit the mats at 9am with Rigan teaching some 50-50 guard counters and technique both gi and no gi.  Then after a short lunch break (provided by My Fit Foods!!!) we have Roger Machado sharing his zen like approach from 2-5pm.

More to come!
