Pam & Denise Forever

I am so joyed and happy for my friends Pam & Denise as they invited me to be part of their intimate family on May 17th 2014 where they tied the knot after 17+ years of love and kinship!  I met Denise nearly 8 years ago on the mat at NW Jiu Jitsu where she promptly choked my big goofy ass out.  We soon became friends and without a doubt she is one of the best training partners I have ever had.  Brian's only black belt and most loyal and dedicated student, Denise is the epitome of the principles on which BJJ is built, and standing right next to her the entire way has been her faithful companion in life Pam.  A more lovely couple you will not meet.
Yes, thats correct... she got married in her black belt, cuz that's how we roll!

You will notice I have not used their last name and that is quite intentional as Pam & Denise truly are one love!  I have never met a more wonderful couple and I cannot be happier that the people of the state of Washington finally got their collective heads out of the clouds and legalized the marriage of anyone to anyone.  The fact that we have to legislate these human right's is beyond me but also a topic for another time.  Congrats girlz, and thank you for allowing me to be part of your day!

Love always,

PS Not that they are hip hop fans, but this track from the Polish Ambassador featuring Mr. Lif and Ayla Nereo is amazingly beautiful and the brilliant lyrics about feeling lost and being found seem apropos:

Womens Day Out 2014 - Puyallup WA.

Do you suffer from PTSD due to an assault or traumatic event? Are you tired of being hushed and medicated?  Then join  NWJJA's very own black belt Denise Holcomb this weekend, along with a cadre of women instructors from the Pacific NW as they raise awareness and money for Women's Day Out 2014, Saturday May 3rd.

Unfortunately cases of sexual assault are rising in our society, both inside and out of the military, and this event is an attempt to raise awareness to PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and MSA (military sexual assault).  Both fitness and martial art / self defense seminars will be taught along with a forum and opportunity to get support and find help if you have suffered from psychological/emotional/physical pain via assault or other traumatic event.

Click here to be re-directed to the Womens Day Out site.  Or you can contact Maria Dill 253-632-5085  Suggested donations are only $10 with the proceeds benefiting the American Lake Women's PTSD Program, and women veterans are welcome to attend free of charge.

Denise Holcomb at the 2013 Masters Worlds
Denise Holcomb, one of the instructors of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sessions, is a black belt under Brian J. Johnson whom she has been loyally training with since her martial journey began over 12 years ago.  She is a seasoned teacher as well as being the silver medalist in the 2013 Masters / Seniors Black Belt lightweight division where she held her own with girls 15 years her younger!

NWJJA: The Best Training Period

Hands down the best training crew one could ask for.  From L-R: Shadow / Eric "The Dark Mountain" Montenegro / Brian "Mr. BJJ" Johnson (our fearless leader) / The Best Looking Wrist Locking Expert This Side of the Mississippi / Denise Holcomb (Brian's first black belt) / Justin Guyer.

If you are in the Pacific NW and are NOT training at NW Jiu Jitsu Academy, then stop by and experience the difference.  Quite simply accept no substitutes!

Jiu Jitsu Magazine Appearance

Yours truly got a quick shot in the latest issue of Jiu Jitsu Magazine (much thanks to my homie Kyle for finding it).  A pic of my promotion to brown belt with my coach Brian Johnson and his black belt Denise Holcomb, both of which have been the biggest influences on me both on and off the mat!

I will be at the BEST Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in Seattle, WA. NW Jiu Jitsu Academy all week and will have limited availability for pictures and autographs. Warm your wrists and come play!

I will get a copy tomorrow.  Shout out to Mike Velez the hardest working editor in grappling.  Thanks for the recognition brother.

Training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy in Seattle, WA.

Interested in training with some of the best grapplers in the Pacific NW?  Unlike some others claims of teaching "exclusively Brazilian Jiu Jitsu," here at NW Jiu Jitsu Academy we have two black belts offering advanced and begging BJJ, as well as one no gi BJJ class on Monday nights.  Our curriculum is based upon over 30 years of grappling experience under Brian Johnson, a 2nd degree black belt in the tradition of the Machado family BJJ.

Right now Brian is offering a New Years Special of $1100 for the entire year of 2014, along with a free private lesson.  A savings of over $300 on your BJJ education!  Hurry in to take advantage of this great deal and be set for the entire year.

Brian is also offering private lessons and eval's in an effort to improve your own personal game.  Students eval's are $30 and can be scheduled with Brian directly.  If you would like to get a private lesson (or series of them) with Brian they are $75/hour and can be scheduled with him directly.

Three (multi time) world champions reside at NWJJA!
Another amazing resource to take advantage of is Brian's first black belt, Denise Holcomb.  Denise has been a loyal and dedicated student of Brian's for over 12 years and has trained with all the Machado brothers, as well as being a silver medalist at the 2013 Masters & Seniors Black Belt Division!  Denise often sees details even our coach misses, and brings a truly unique perspective to the art.  I will tell you right now no one, NO ONE, knows the basic curriculum better then Denise!  If you are serious about stepping up your game spend $50 and an hour and she will help you reach the next level.

Amazing resources coupled with a the cleanest, nicest gym in Seattle.  Stop by 942 N. 95th and check out what you have been missing.

Team Senility Strikes Silver at the World Master & Senior Tournament

NW Jiu Jitsu Academy was proudly represented by a core cadre of master and senior ranked fighters affectionately known as "Team Senility" this past weekend at UC Long Beach, CA.

A huge congrats to Perry Bateson who decisively took to the purple belt senior 3 division racking up 20 points on his poor unsuspecting first victim before finishing the match with an armbar in the waning seconds!  Perry epitomizes taking his game to his opponent.  In the finals Perry's opponent got the edge with a few more points to squeeze out the gold.  This was Perry's first major IBJJF tournament and I have to hand it to my friend... you did an amazing job mi amigo!  Congrats on silver!

The absolute standout this weekend was without a doubt Denise Holcomb who took double silver in both her division and the absolute.  Both times fighting a girl 16+ years younger representing Nova Unaio with none other then Robson Moura coaching her.  Yes my friends you heard correctly... THE Robson Mora was shouting instructions in Portuguese to his first degree black belt right next to Brian and I coaching Denise!  It was awesome, as Denise showed the months of training and hard work she has put into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Again this was Denise's first major tournament, and the first time she has fought since purple belt.

Outstanding job both of you!  Brian, myself, and all your team mates could not be prouder of the two of you!  Both Perry and Denise are exemplary role models for any and all students of the martial arts.

Also wanted to take this moment to thank our coach Brian J. Johnson.  I am not sure if most of you understand what it is like to have a teacher, a true teacher.... guide you through an art with nothing but pure love for you and the art itself... I am not sure if many of you have experienced this.  But I have, and I wanted to say from the bottom of my heart "Thank you" to my coach, my friend, my training partner, and very much my mentor, Brian Johnson.  Without you... none of this is possible.  We will never be able to repay you for all you have given us!

Train Hard.  Train Smart.
