Nine Year Itch

09 No Gi Worlds L-R: Dave Meyer / BJJ / JAB
Nine years ago on today's date I started my formal Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training under Brian Johnson at the NW Jiu Jitsu Academy.  I am grateful he accepted my big goofy ass as a student, and it would be the understatement of the decade to say I have learned countless lessons both on and off the mat from Brian.  For that I am thankful.  I look forward to nine more years sharing the mat!

Metamoris V

The latest card on the Metamoris all grappling promotion has been announced.  The famed MMA match between Renzo Gracie and Kazushi Sakuraba will be once again visited as well as a powerful undercard with Zak Maxwell, Yuri Simoes, and Rafael Lovato Jr. just to name a few.

I have mixed feelings about this card.  Saku is one of my favorite of all times and while this is not MMA, I still find it hard to watch one of my heroes continue to fight because of money when in all reality he should have retired a few years back.  As for Renzo... I have lost all respect since his "nightclub incident" and his subsequent response.  Maxwell and Tonon promise to be a barn burner that will NOT end in a draw!  The remainder of the card has promise and call me a curmudgeon but I am not so keen on the secret match shit.  Just tell me who I am paying for!

ADCC Documentary

Bobby Razak is supposedly making a documentary on the history and development of the ADCC grappling tournament.  Below is the quick highlight of the film that is set to drop on the 10th of next month.  I surely hope the finished product is presented better then this preview.

Fredson Paixao - Master of the Locking of the Wrist

Known as the wristlock master, Fredson Paixao was recently interviewed by the cats at BJJ Hacks on his small joint manipulation skills.  This is a great video showcasing a rarely respected submission which is essential in self defense!  Think about it... you ain't grabbing a weapon, my arm, my clothing, or anything for that matter,
with a broken wrist.

Eddie Bravo Visits Portland Oregon July 25-27

My vote for logo of the year!!
Man o' man the Pacific NW is THE place to be for a grappler as we have John Will's seminar coming up at NWJJA in Seattle June 22nd, Henry Akins will visit the area in August, and I just got word of the NW No-Gi Training Camp in Portland, OR. July 25-27th 2014 which will feature at least one seminar with Jean Jacques Machado black belt, and 10th Planet founder Eddie Bravo!

It has been a minute since Eddie last visited the Pac NW and this is a wonderful opportunity to train with one of the 21st century's most revered grapplers and teachers.  Regardless of what you think of his personal views on marijuana, chem trails, or government conspiracies... Eddie is honestly one of the top instructors I have ever had the honor of sharing the mats with!  A man whose grasp of fundamental grappling is really second to none, as he is truly his masters protege in that Eddie is an innovator whose foundation is rooted in the fundamental laws of grappling.

Johnny Fu / Your's Truly / Bravo / Doc in 2009

Do not miss this opportunity to train with Eddie Bravo!  Visit 10th Planet Portland to pre-register for this event that will surely sell out!

And just in case you have no clue whom this Eddie Bravo cat is...

93 Brand Choking Hazard Rash Guard Review

Now that summer is in full swing you are going to want to ensure you grab some new rashies to keep you cool and cootie free.  The limited release collaboration between 93 Brand and Meerkatsu has resulted in the "Choking Hazard" short sleeve rash guard from Roll More dot com.  Dare I say this might be the perfect summer rash guard.

The 85% polyester / 15% spandex weave has just the right amount of compression maintaining comfortability while providing the cooling and wicking one expects from a grappling rash guard.  I have worn the Choking Hazard for the past couple of months and the reinforced stitching shows zero wear and tear in terms of pilling, pulling at the seems, nor loose threads.

This is a 100% sublimated rash guard, with even the tag sublimated into the collar (small things like the absence of an annoying tag rubbing on your neck are what make the Choking Hazard a winner), maintains the faux prescription bottle theme perfectly.  A cute breakdown of uses, active ingredients, colourings, directions, and warnings adorn the back complimented by a giant "Choking Hazard" sign on the ventral surface.  The short sleeve version is offered in the sharp orange and black color scheme that is good looking without being obnoxious featuring a design from artist Meerkatsu.

Honestly this blend and quality of design are one of the most comfortable rash guards I have come across in a while, and the only negative aspect I can find is it is manufactured in Pakistan.  Comfort coupled with a great design and affordable price ($59.99 msrp), should put the Choking Hazard rash guard on top of your wish list for summer grappling clothing.

You can order your size rashie from the Roll More martial arts website by clicking here.

Positional Studies with BJJ Scout - Bicep Ride

Scout has been down and out with an injury, but he is back with a vengeance including his latest venture... a series of breakdowns on Positional Studies, the most recent being 'Bicep Ride.'  As always BJJ Scout breaks down grappling into bite sized morsels that are easy for us to chew regardless of rank and experience.  The more experience one has the more they can digest.

You will also notice a nice little shout out at the beginning (10 second mark) of the video for Brian Johnson's "B-12 BJJ Curriculum" so please do us a favor and help spread the word via Scout's video. Not so coincidentally many of the principles Scout is breaking down are taught in Brian's fundamental curriculum!

NWJJA: The Best Training Period

Hands down the best training crew one could ask for.  From L-R: Shadow / Eric "The Dark Mountain" Montenegro / Brian "Mr. BJJ" Johnson (our fearless leader) / The Best Looking Wrist Locking Expert This Side of the Mississippi / Denise Holcomb (Brian's first black belt) / Justin Guyer.

If you are in the Pacific NW and are NOT training at NW Jiu Jitsu Academy, then stop by and experience the difference.  Quite simply accept no substitutes!

Minowaman Breaks Goran Jettingstad's Leg - IGF 1

MMA legend, and renown leg attack artist, Ikuhisa Minowaman fought Goran Jettingstad in Tokyo Japan at the inaugural IGF MMA event.  Anyone familiar with Minowa knows he LOVES leg attacks and is quite brutal with there application.  Apparently Goran and his fight camp did not receive said memo and seemingly invited Minowa to grab Goran's left leg, and allowed Minowa to slide his left leg through and break Goran's femur.  Effective not only in MMA but a fight-ender on the street!  Leg locks and their defense are neglected across the martial spectrum for no good reason.

So sit back and turn down the volume, turn up this leaked Pharoahe Monch and Black Thought collab (from Monch's forthcoming PTSD album) and learn to defend some leg locks tonight! Click here to listen.

Metamoris III - March 29, 2014

Metamoris III has been announced and it sounds like an exciting lineup that will hopefully deliver a bit more action then the last "submission-only-except-in-the-event-of-a-tie-which-is-boring" event.  The main fight will feature the rematch between Royler Gracie and Eddie Bravo (a bit of old school Gracie vs. Machado).
March 29th is the fight date, and they are running a special of 50% off the stream price ($19.99) if you pre-order prior to the end of January.  Not only are Kenny Florian and Jeff Glover commentating this go around, but check out this lineup:

  • Royler Gracie vs. Eddie Bravo
  • Rafa Mendes vs. Clark Gracie
  • Vinny Magalhaes vs. Keenan Cornelius
  • Dean Lister vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral
  • Samir Chantre vs. Gui Mendes
  • Sean Roberts vs. Zak Maxwell

NWJJA: Belt Promotions January 16, 2014

A huge night for Brian Johnson and his NW Jiu Jitsu Academy in north Seattle, WA. as we promoted no less than 10 martial artists.  I will write up more on my own personal journey through purple belt soon, but I wanted to take the moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of our grapplers at the premier BJJ gym in the Pacific Northwest.

Big Ben was the sole soul awarded blue belt last night.  But we had a bevy of new purples including Brett Smith, Coach Bo, David C., Ivan Moran, and Joseph Montagne.  Mike, Justin Guyer, Nick, and myself were awarded our brown belts on January 16, 2014.

Congrats to all on the well deserved promotions.  Welcome back to the bottom of the totem poll, now get your ass back on the mat and train!

Training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy in Seattle, WA.

Interested in training with some of the best grapplers in the Pacific NW?  Unlike some others claims of teaching "exclusively Brazilian Jiu Jitsu," here at NW Jiu Jitsu Academy we have two black belts offering advanced and begging BJJ, as well as one no gi BJJ class on Monday nights.  Our curriculum is based upon over 30 years of grappling experience under Brian Johnson, a 2nd degree black belt in the tradition of the Machado family BJJ.

Right now Brian is offering a New Years Special of $1100 for the entire year of 2014, along with a free private lesson.  A savings of over $300 on your BJJ education!  Hurry in to take advantage of this great deal and be set for the entire year.

Brian is also offering private lessons and eval's in an effort to improve your own personal game.  Students eval's are $30 and can be scheduled with Brian directly.  If you would like to get a private lesson (or series of them) with Brian they are $75/hour and can be scheduled with him directly.

Three (multi time) world champions reside at NWJJA!
Another amazing resource to take advantage of is Brian's first black belt, Denise Holcomb.  Denise has been a loyal and dedicated student of Brian's for over 12 years and has trained with all the Machado brothers, as well as being a silver medalist at the 2013 Masters & Seniors Black Belt Division!  Denise often sees details even our coach misses, and brings a truly unique perspective to the art.  I will tell you right now no one, NO ONE, knows the basic curriculum better then Denise!  If you are serious about stepping up your game spend $50 and an hour and she will help you reach the next level.

Amazing resources coupled with a the cleanest, nicest gym in Seattle.  Stop by 942 N. 95th and check out what you have been missing.

Brian "Mr. BJJ" Johnson - 2013 Featherweight No Gi World Champion

Wanted to send out a HUGE congrats to my coach, mentor, training partner, and most importantly... my friend Brian J. Johnson on his 2013 World Champion No Gi accomplishment over the weekend!  This battle was a hard fought one that lasted longer than these few short minutes.

Brian has been training HARD for months for the World Master and Senior Championships a few weeks back, but then sustained an injury that left him unable to use one arm.  Not satisfied with his performance at the Masters, Brian decided to put it all on the line for the 2013 No Gi Championships here in Long Beach, CA.

His opponent was tough as nails and came out guns a blazing, but B persevered and came out with the 12-0 victory and his second No Gi world Championship (2009), making him one of the most decorated grapplers in all of the Pacific NW!

I am fortunate enough to be close to my coach and know the trials and tribulations he goes through on a daily basis and let me say this battle was fought on many fronts for him.

Congrats brother.  Couldn't be more proud and happy for you!

RCJ Machado Five Brothers Camp: Touchdown

Caught the red eye into DFW and arrived without a hiccup (and with our luggage this time!).  Going to start a weekend of amazing training by checking out the Stars taking on the Flames tonight, then a fresh breakfast and off to the seminar tomorrow morning!  I am going to do my best to update the blog with fresh reports on the camp, but between the 6+ hours of training coupled with ensuring Kelland does not run off and poke an eye out (his or someone else's) I am not sure how much time I will have to log on.

If you are not within the borders of Texas by now you are approaching the absolute cutoff for making it to 2013's camp.
